The Autofiber Towel System: Which Towel for Which Job

The Autofiber towel system One towel per job. Your paint can tell the difference. DETAILER'S DOMAIN · NORWOOD, NJ

Most swirl marks never see a bad polisher or an automatic car wash. They come from the towel drawer. A towel that is perfect for pulling wax off a hood will mar soft black paint if you dry with it, and a drying towel makes a mess of compound residue. That is why we treat microfiber as a system with a right tool per job, and it is why the towel brand we stock at the shop is Autofiber.

This post walks the system: what each towel is for, what it costs, and where the two new Saver applicators fit in. If you only read one section, use the picker below. Tap the job and it hands you the towel.

Why microfiber is a system, not a pile of rags

Three things separate one microfiber towel from another. The weave decides how the fiber touches the surface, loops for scrubbing and lifting residue, twisted strands for soaking up water. The weight, measured in GSM, decides how much material and cushion is in the towel. And the blend, like the 70/30 polyester to polyamide mix Autofiber uses on its paintwork towels, decides how soft and absorbent the fiber itself is.

Use the wrong combination and you feel it later. Wipe compound with a plush drying towel and the residue loads deep into the pile where it stays, ready to scratch the next panel. Dry with a short-pile utility towel and you will chase water around the car until the towel gives up. The fix is not buying better towels once a year. It is using the right towel every time.

Autofiber Dreadnought microfiber drying towel

Autofiber Dreadnought Drying Towel

Double-twist loop pile that pulls a full panel dry in one pass, so you drag microfiber across wet paint once instead of five times. The 20 by 40 inch size does a whole car. This is the towel we featured when Autofiber first landed in the store, and it is still the first one we hand people.

Autofiber terry microfiber towels 10 pack

Autofiber Terry Microfiber Towel, 10 pack

Terry loops lift spent polish and compound off the panel instead of smearing it around. Ten in a pack means a fresh face for every panel, which is the whole trick to clean wipe-off. Keep these away from the drying pile and they stay honest.

Autofiber Mini Saver coating applicator with barrier layer

Autofiber Mini Saver Applicator

New in the store. A hydrophobic barrier between the terry face and the foam stops your coating from soaking into the sponge, so the product you paid for ends up on the paint instead of curing inside an applicator. Flip it for a fresh side halfway around the car.

Autofiber Tire Saver curved dressing applicator

Autofiber Tire Saver Curved Dressing Applicator

New in the store. The curved face wraps the sidewall and lays an even band of dressing in one pass, and the same barrier layer as the Mini Saver keeps the dressing off your hands. Twist pile works product into tire lettering that foam blocks skip over.

The new Saver applicators, and why the barrier matters

Ceramic coatings are thin and they flow fast. Put a few drops on a standard foam applicator and a good share of it soaks straight through before it ever reaches the paint. It cures in there too, which is why a foam block turns gummy halfway through a car and starts dragging.

The Saver line fixes this with a hydrophobic barrier layer between the microfiber face and the foam core. Product sits on the working surface until you lay it down. You get more coverage per drop, the applicator stays clean through the job, and on a coating that costs real money per bottle, the two dollar applicator quietly pays for itself. We just brought in the Mini Saver for paint and the curved Tire Saver for dressing, and both are in the picker above.

Questions we get asked

What does GSM actually mean? Grams per square meter, the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means more fiber and more cushion, which is what you want touching paint. Lower GSM towels are thinner and better for glass and interior work, where plush pile just gets in the way.

How should I wash microfiber? Separately from everything else, with a plain detergent, no fabric softener ever. Softener coats the fibers and kills the static grab that makes microfiber work. Dry on low heat or hang them.

When do I retire a towel? When it drops or drags. A paint towel that has been through the wash a hundred times gets demoted to jambs and wheels, not thrown out. Just mark it so it never goes back in the paint pile.

Do I really need different towels for a car wearing PPF or coating? The towels are the same, the discipline is stricter, since a scratch in film or coating is a more expensive fix than one in bare clear coat. We wrote up our full wash process on the studio side: how we wash a car wearing PPF.

Where to get it

Everything above ships from our shop in Norwood, New Jersey, and it is all in one place: the Autofiber collection.

If you are starting from zero, start where the water is. The Dreadnought drying towel at $25 changes the worst five minutes of every wash, and the rest of the system builds out from there. Not sure what your towel drawer is missing? Email us or call the shop and describe what you do on a Saturday. We will tell you exactly which three to buy first.
