Exterior Restoration and Wheels: The E38 Visual Transformation

Starting Condition

The exterior told a story of 24 years of use. Not abused, but definitely showing its years of accumulation of minor damages.

Both bumpers had paint damage and scratches. The mirrors had faded and no longer matched the body color. Various dents needed attention. The roundels were faded and sad looking. Trim pieces were dulled out. The black trim on the front bumper was tired.

None of this was catastrophic, but it all contributed to a car that looked neglected rather than cherished. The paint itself was decent underneath, it just needed the damaged pieces addressed and the whole thing corrected.

Bumper and Mirror Respray

I sent the front bumper, rear bumper, and mirrors to Final Touch Collision for respray. These pieces were too far gone for correction alone.

With the bumpers and mirrors removed, you could see years of buildup: dirt and debris that had accumulated behind trim pieces and in crevices. Cleaned all of that out before reinstallation. It's one of those things you can't do without taking things apart.

The painted pieces came back from Final Touch looking fresh. Proper color match, good finish, ready to reinstall. The mirrors finally matched the body again instead of standing out as faded afterthoughts.

Dent Removal and Paint Correction

With the bumpers off for respray, I turned to the dents in the body panels. Paintless dent removal works well on E38s when the damage isn't too severe. It's all I needed to get the body straight again.

The whole car then got wet sanded and corrected. 24 years of swirl marks, oxidation, and minor scratches came out. The paint underneath was solid, it just needed proper correction to bring back the depth and gloss.

A full body respray is on the list for the future, but for now the corrected paint with fresh bumpers and mirrors looks significantly better than where we started.

OEM Exterior Details

A bunch of small OEM pieces got refreshed or replaced.

Roundels: Front and rear roundels replaced. The originals were faded with the colors washed out. Fresh roundels are one of those cheap upgrades that make a surprising difference in how the car presents.

Front Bumper Black Trim: The black trim piece on the front bumper was tired and faded. It was replaced with a new one.

OEM Pre-LCI Center Grills: Knowing which generation your parts are from is a detail that matters in getting these cars right. The pre-LCI grills have the correct look for a 2001 model year.

Clear Bulbs: I swapped the old orange bulbs for clear ones. A small visual update that cleans up the lighting appearance.

M Parallel Wheel Restoration

The M Parallels that came with the car were pretty beat up with rash marks, curb damage, and a tired finish. It's a common sight with used BMW wheels.

Will at Proformance in New Rochelle completely refinished them. It's the same place that did the valve covers. He does quality work.

The wheels came back looking factory fresh, with all the curb rash and damage repaired, it was refinished to precise specifications. Back on the car, the fresh wheels transformed the car’s appearance. Wheels make such a huge difference.

The restored M Parallels looked great with the KW suspension and H&R spacers.Proper stance, correct wheel for the era, everything is dialed in. I could have stopped there.

BBS LM Upgrade

But the goal was period-correct perfection, and that meant considering what the holy grail wheels would be for an E38 of this era.

Two options stood out: Alpina Softlines in 20s or BBS LMs. The Alpina wheels have been discontinued and are getting hard to find in good condition. The BBS LMs are a classic design that you can still buy brand new.

I went with the BBS LMs in 20 inch sizing with Diamond Silver finish. It's a wheel that was available in 2001 and would have been the upgrade choice for someone building a serious E38 back then. It's period correct but elevated.

They were mounted with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 4s. Modern tire technology on a classic wheel design. The grip and feel are significantly better than whatever tires were probably on this car five years ago.

BBS Details

BBS Stamped Lugs: I found an older rare set of lugs with BBS stamped on them. A small details that the right people notice.

Center Cap Floaters: BBS center cap floaters keep the logo upright regardless of wheel position. Another small touch that shows attention to detail.

Suction Cup Tool: The proper tool for pulling center caps without damaging them. You need this if you're going to do wheel maintenance.

Alpina Replica Lip

I added an Alpina replica lip to the front bumper. It has the period-correct aesthetic for a built E38, the kind of subtle aero that would have been available from Alpina back in the day.

The lip was repainted to match and installed. Comparing the before and after, the whole front end profile is transformed. The bumper looks more purposeful, lower, more aggressive without being boy-racer obvious.

Between the BBS wheels and the Alpina lip, the car has that built E38 look that was the goal. Not a show car, not a stance build, just a well-sorted example that looks like someone cares about getting it right.

Current State and Future Plans

The exterior is now at a point where it presents well. Fresh bumpers and mirrors, corrected paint, proper wheels, period-correct details throughout.

A full body respray is still on the list. That's a major project that will require the car being down for a while. That'st for after financial recovery from the audio project. Probably 12 months out, as long as there's garage space to store the car.

The front windshield and rear window also need replacement, but those are being held until the respray happens. No point installing new glass and then having to remove it for paint work.

What This Delivers

The visual transformation is consistent from the mechanics to the the inside the cabin. Every aspect of the car has been addressed to some degree.

The BBS LMs on proper suspension with the Alpina lip creates an E38 that looks like it was built by someone who knows these cars. It's not overdone, not trying too hard. Just right.

People who know E38s recognize what this is. People who don't just see a clean vintage BMW. That's the sweet spot for a period-correct build. It reads as quality without screaming for attention.

I'm loving this car. The journey to get it up to standard has been exactly that, a journey. But seeing it now versus where it started makes every decision feel worthwhile. This E38 is something worth preserving.
